New #Book Sneak Peek: Myndil and His Monsters

No, that isn't want the book is called, but it does have to do with ancient creatures and monsters.  More release information will be available soon, but for now, enjoy the story of Myndil and his other self: Shirking my duties at the monastery is never something I mean to do. I get caught up in my morning prayers, which becomes me having a rather long conversation with God, asking why there is suffering and illness in the world and why the sky is blue and why I sometimes get oats stuck between my teeth and they never come out even though I do clean my mouth thoroughly before bedtime, and before I am aware, the sun is up, breakfast has long past, and the abbot is demanding that I clean out the latrine in penance of being late with my chores. It is not that I do not like managing the brewery or helping in the dairy or being in the garden, but speaking to God and asking questions I want answers to is why I became a missionary from the first. Having frittered away the early ...

New Story for the #NewYear: Clerical Work

Image
For all those, like myself and Bilar, who have to work through the holidays: Bilar had been at his desk all night: his study of the sample he had taken from Brigid had led him into the Burrows of Knowledge, and where an interest in discovery is avid, eager minds will follow, and Bilar followed the star of his curiosity all night long. He wrote and studied, fidgeted and fussed, and just as he was on the tail of a conclusion, the somnolence that had been hanging on him all night surmounted him. He lay his work aside, to keep from smirching it, and surrendered to fatigue, laying his head on his desk, promising himself only to close his eyes for a few minutes and get on with his medical conclusions. Weariness never speaks in minutes when it can communicate in hours, and many hours had gone before Bilar opened his eyes again, lifting his head only when Aghatha entered the infirmary, bearing the tea trey and an empty basket for the bedclothes.       ...

Maith Ailineighdaeth and Happy Frewyn New Year to all! There are many new books coming in the new year, including a new Baba story, a new Galleisian tale, and Martje's very own cookery book, replete with recipies (or receipts) from the castle keep. This is a book I've wanted to have done for sometime. The book will also include a few dishes from the northern continent and all the making methods. Below is one of the items in the book: Karnwyl peat cake, as explained by Martje: "Peat cake, or gurry cake as it's called in Westren and parts of Hallanys, ain't made with turf, though it might have more nutrition if it were. It does look like a guggin, though, when it's cut, but it don't taste half as bad as it looks. Sure looks like a bit 'o the mallacht, but if made right, has a lovely ginger taste and will keep you th'while. Traditionally, the outsiders are made from leftover ginger loaf, not sweet, 'cause they don't get much sugar in K...

A story for the #holidays: To Gut a Goose

Nowadays, it is not everyone who is called upon to secure their own holiday dinner. We peruse the markets, choose a turkey or ham as we like, dress it and broil it and think nothing of it, but if we were made to garnish the table as it is done on the farms, very few of us would ever put a bird on the table again: E veryone assisted Searle and Aghatha in bringing the plates into the kitchen, Martje prepared and conveyed the tea trey upstairs, and Boudicca went to start the fire whilst everyone sat around the table, admiring the view from the window, the glumes and awns of the grass preceding the royal wood foretelling a frigid season, the night rime freezing over in a delicate sheen. Teacups furnished every hand, pipes were brought out, and the Tyfferim contingent loomed near the window, to enjoy their pipes for the five minutes the family would allow them to smoke them, effuming in flocculent clouds, making aspirate sighs over their work for the year being done-- excepting Locha...
