Story for the Day: Mureadh's Sisters

Image
Mureadh Farhayden has thirteen sisters. I don't know how he manages just one. O nce the carriage was settled, the horses were put by to rest, and the porter was sent to the inn to convey their luggage, the remainder of the large Farhayden family came to join their brother and indulge his every wish of a complete family gathering. Mureadh stood from his place, pretended not to be crying, though his glimmering eyes and red nose told a different story, and collected all of his sisters into his immense reach, giving them fond kisses and oscillating them about until they could no longer bear his crushing affection. He received wry simpers and conscious smirks from his older sisters, but a few of the younger girls shared his sentiments. “You’ve all grown,” said Mureadh with sullen inflection, happy to see his younger sisters mature and sad that he should not have been present to witness it. He patted their heads and remarked each one of them: the two youngest had grown the most since he...

Story for the Day: Mureadh and Tiulaine

Image
Everyone always teases Mureadh for his devout constitution, not because he's religious but because he loves the Leabhar Maith more than anything in the world. Here he finally has his two loves come together, and he's a wreck.  A gentle introduction would be both their tranquility, and Mureadh graciously did her the honour of a bow. “I am Sir Mureadh Farhayden, Captain of the Royal Guard and protector of the Brennin line,” he said, his long red mantle draping over his shoulder as he righted. “His Majesty King Alasdair sent me to be your guardian.”                 She wanted to believe him, but she had learned to be distrustful. It took her a few moments to consider his addresses, and in the midst of her thoughtfulness, she received confirmation of his assertions: she descried the Brennin livery on his cuirass when he placed his hands back at his sides. If this was not enough to secure her comforts, the clas...

#NaNoWriMo Challenge: Story for the Day: The Tavern

Image
I hurt my wrist so the writing is a little slow today. Here is the continuation of the National Novel Writing Month challenge. Enjoy! The Tavern                 The winnings gathered and cloaks got, Teague and Mureadh left the keep and went toward the Wayward Traveler, Teague with a satisfied countenance and Mureadh with a slightly less hopeful expression. A good meal, however, would revive his spirits, and still further a rejuvenation was the beginnings of holiday merriment prevalent throughout the capital square. The glass candles were being fitted up, the Church was buzzing with the hum of the practicing choir, empty carts were being conveyed from the main gate to the marketplace, winter apples were being empties from their barrels into vats of boiled honey and mulled spices, children were hopping along the lanes and regarding the shoppekeepers  changing their window displays, the doors of the bakeries w...

#NaNoWriMo Challenge: Story for the Day: The Card Game

Image
Here in Frewyn, we're doing the NaNoWriMo mega challenge: writing 50,000 words a week for 4 weeks. So far, the word count is at 12,000 for the week. Here is one of the stories I wrote for the day. Enjoy! The Card Game WIP of Teague by Twisk                 As Nerri and Merra were gone out together before the preparatory holiday visit, Teague proposed a few rounds of cards to be played in the soldier’s mess with Bilar, Mureadh, and Connors. Bilar professed a visit to Rithea for the holiday was due and therefore thankfully declined the invitation, but as Connors boasted of seeing his family on the morning after Ailineighdaeth night and Mureadh was waiting for his sister to arrive in the capital, both of them agreed to engage themselves for the game until their pockets should be lightened.                 Mureadh had no inclination for b...

#Halloween Story for the Day: A Perfect Welcome

Image
The legend of Cillian and Gilean is famous in Frewyn, much like the Scarlet Pimpernel or Robin Hood is for us. Many people in Frewyn dress up as the outlaw and his lady for Seamhair, their All Hallow's Eve. Happy Halloween!  A Perfect Welcome  Ghodhina and Teague                 Teague bounded up the steps to his home with all the felicity his eager spirits could command. He was in an ecstasy to have seen the amber glow of candlelight through their bedroom window and was even more in raptures to see the shadows of Qwynlin and his siblings dancing along the far wall of the main room. He had a momentary scheme of climbing the lattice and surprising them by peering over the bedroom sill window and crawling into the main room without their notice, but his hearted governed him into prudence, and he was already ascending the steps before his designs had taken full form. He thought to knock, but he wished ...

Story for the Day: The Interview: Part 1

Image
Part of a story that is going to be showcased for the Commander and Den Asaan tour in 2 weeks. Enjoy! The Interview                 The Duchess of Marridon’s visits to Frewyn being more frequent as of late was the subject of much discussion in the Chambers. Each of her returns to the Triumvirate courts supplied fresh gossip for the officiating nobles, and the subject of the highest discussion was Her Grace’s friendship with King Alasdair and her acquaintance with the commander and Den Asaan. Numerous were those who wished to know all the various beginnings of the strange connection: to be in company of a king was expected for one of the Duchess’ rank and consequence, but for Her Grace to befriend a giant and a farmer was not a natural occurrence. Many became curious of the association, and when it was discovered that the woman and the giant were responsible for Frewyn’s pride as a free nation, a reporter was di...

Story for the day: The Pink Dress

Image
We saw the most abominable pink dress yesterday. This is what happened. Rautu will not wear your dress The Pink Dress                  Midsummer had come, which inevitably brought about Brigid’s Day once again. The arena in the keep was set and Alasdair had prepared to ask the Den Asaan to be the Brennin family champion when he rather decided that in honour of his newborn son he should be the champion himself. Rautu would have entered the competition if only to destroy the king and claim he require more training but such a feat would be too easily done and therefore the sense of challenge was lost. He did, however, engage in a small skirmish in the yard with Mureadh and Connors to prepare them for the friendly contest and left them with wishes that should defeat their king if only to prove Alasdair’s need for practice.               ...
