Story for the Day: Lochan Donnegal

Image
Here is a little bit about Sheamas' brother Lochan. Enjoy! Lochan                 Lochan Donnegal, a relatively young stockman at thirty, of stout build, simple mind and sanguine person, roused from sleep early that morning with the object of finishing the chief of his work before evening. This day, which began as a significant day due to its being his favourite brother’s birthday, became important for another reason. He raised from his bed and prepared for his day, willing to forgo the comforts of a morning meal if only to have more work done in its place. There were animals to be fed, pens to be fixed, young creatures to be given warm milk and nourishing minerals, a cow to be milked, eggs to be taken in from the coops, the greener of baled hay to be doled for eating and the paler to be made into new floor mats for resting. An apple would do for his breakfast before all this work was to be done, and after donning his overalls, Lochan hopped from the kitchen of his small red ho

Story for the Day: Sheamas' Birthday

Image
Sheamas’ Birthday                 Sheamas, much in the style of his father, was accustomed to having birthdays without the object of celebrating them. Though he could not be called old enough to regard the observance as a trite formality, he was sagacious enough to understand that birthdays brought undue celebration. Gifts would be forced upon him, drinks would be shared in his honour -especially where Aiden and Adaoire were concerned, a family party would be demanded, and upon the whole the celebrating of his birthday would be an insalubrious affair, one he was certain to like but one he could not condone; work would have to be missed, businesses would  need to be closed, and Sheamas felt it best to remain silent when the particular day arrived to save everyone the trouble of exertion. There were always a few nagging assertions from his mother, demanding that she be allowed to celebrate it by making him a supper and procuring a present, but his brothers knew better than to overthrow h

Story of the Day: An Ailineighdaeth Story

Image
In honour of a certain holiday in July, here is a Frewyn holiday story. The Ailineighdaeth card sent to me by Twisk An Ailineighdaeth Story                 The morning before the Ailineighdaeth festivities had come, and while the Diras castle keep was in a bustle of high animation with everyone making the requisite preparations to usher in Frewyn’s most consequential holiday, the commander was in the training yard giving the Diras regiments their last orders before their holiday dismissal. They were, as ever, given the choice of remaining in the keep and participating in the celebration due in the great hall and of traveling to their respective families for the two days the observance commanded. Those with families in the west and far south were to be given an extra day to take traveling time into account, and once the regiments were dismissed, many soldiers decided to take the opportunity to venture to their homes rather than remain and enjoy the succor of the castle maids or

Story for the Day: The F Word

Image
The F Word                 The commander entered the kitchen from yeoman’s quarter entrance of the keep to find Martje sitting at the table near the window with some tea in her hand and a large slice of sponge before her. She seemed downtrodden and dejected, resting her chin on a bent hand and staring sighingly out the window, her countenance rapt in despondent consideration. She only moved to sip her tea and lift her slice of cake to her lips. She masticated an a dour pose, seeming to hardly command enjoyment from such a luscious treat, merely eating for the sake of comfort rather than all the happiness such a delicacy would usually accord for the cook. She swallowed and sighed, and then mechanically sipped her tea and raised the cake to her lips once more.   Melissa MaCarthy can be Martje's stand-in for now                 Martje inhaled another heaving and amorous sigh when she noted the commander walking toward her. She invited her to sit by pouring a cup of tea and slidi

Story of the Day: Pirates

Image
Someone suggested that Alasdair should be a pirate. Ha. Pirates A letter came to the keep that was to disturb the general peace of the morning. The particular correspondence was from Livanon, the direction to the commander, and the address from Captain Sarasa. It conveyed the odd and unexpected report of his brother’s harmonious marriage- as harmonious as two royals so complacent and uninformed could be with one another- and of Sarasa’s newest venture in pirating near the Gulf of Thellis.                 “Pirating,” the commander fleered as she read the message aloud to Alasdair.                 Alasdair wandered over from the kitchen table with his tea in his hand. He leaned over her shoulder to read the errant noble’s scrawl for himself. “Somehow, that profession suits him rather than Captain of the Cavalry.” Alasdair sipped his tea and raised his brow. “He certainly has the outfit for it.”                 The commander simpered. “A red captain’s frock does not a pirate make,
